History

The World is our destination

Euronave was founded as a Shipping Agency in Oporto in 1965. Since its foundation, it has always represented prestigious shipowners.

1965

Foundation of Euronave, with an office at Rua Infante D. Henrique 83 / Ribeira do Porto.

Start of agency representation for Polish Ocean Lines.

1970-80

Agency representation for various companies, including UIM (Union Industrielle et Maritime), Compañía Transatlántica Española, TFL – Trans Freight Lines, Seatrain Lines, and Manchester Liners.

1980

Start of agency representation for Ellerman Lines / Andrew Weir Shipping.

Ellerman Lines began operations in Portugal with bulk cargo ships calling Lisbon and Leixões from Mediterranean ports to Great Britain.

With the advent of containers in 1966, Ellerman Lines started containerizing its services in the Mediterranean, including Portugal, with containers consolidated at Vila Nova de Gaia quay and loaded onto ships using a Liebherr maritime crane.

In the 1980s, Ellerman's shipping business was sold to the Trafalgar House conglomerate, owners of Cunard Line, to form Cunard-Ellerman in 1987, later sold to Andrew Weir Shipping Group and in 2003 to Hamburg Süd.

In 2004, the name was abandoned, and Ellerman Lines ceased to exist.

Euronave is proud to have represented Ellerman Lines throughout its existence in Portugal since the start of containerization, handling the stowage of its ships, later as the general Agent of the company, introducing the name of Portugal, especially in intra-Mediterranean maritime trade, by naming its ships with references including City of Lisbon and City of Oporto.

1983

Relocation to the current facilities at Rua Mouzinho de Albuquerque 13, in Matosinhos.

1985-90

Agency representation for Holland Canada Line, Morline, Latvian Shipping Company, and SAECS – South Africa Europe Container Services.

1991

Start of agency representation for P&O Containers.

The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O), founded in England in 1822 to explore commercial routes with the Iberian Peninsula and later with Egypt, has its name derived from its first two destinations.

Euronave represented the company following P&O's acquisition of Trans Freight Lines until the sale of its shipping division to Nedlloyd in 1995.

At the time, it called at ports in Australia and New Zealand on its route to Europe and then to the United States, maintaining regular calls of its ocean liners in Lisbon en route to England, for unloading meat and wool, major products, and exports from Oceania.

The company pioneered in Portugal the introduction of its own systems for interaction between agents and logistics of its equipment, as well as in decentralizing documentation services, with bills of lading issued at documentation centers in India.

It is worth noting that the company’s flag colors are directly linked to the Iberian flags: white and blue representing the Portuguese flag of 1837, and yellow and red representing the Spanish flag.

Also, the term "posh" (port out starboard home), meaning chic, fine, sophisticated, originated from the most desirable accommodations on ships of the time on journeys to and from England, protecting passengers from the sun, especially when crossing the Suez Canal.
